Today at school a 2nd grader had on a SPAM shirt. It got me thinking that I've never had SPAM before and I really know nothing about it.

SPAM was first manufactured by Hormel Foods in 1937.
During WWII it became more popular because it could be eaten straight out of the can, so it became part of food rations for the Army.

What is Spam exactly?
It's made from 7 ingredients:
Pork shoulder and ham
water
salt
potato starch
sugar
sodium nitrate

Is SPAM healthy?
The short answer is NO. Each can has 6 servings, and each serving has 16 grams of fat, 6 grams of saturated fat and 790 mg of sodium. The average person should consume between 44 - 77 grams of fat daily, 13 grams of saturated fat and less than 2,300 mg of sodium daily.
One serving of SPAM is half your daily intake of saturated fat and a third of your sodium intake.
